Use these as comparison bands, not guaranteed quotes. Vehicle condition, size, pet hair, sand, travel distance and the exact package can all change the final price. MPVs, taxis and minibuses normally cost more than SUVs.
How this price list was built
We recorded advertised consumer prices from fixed-site car washes and mobile operators with identifiable South African service areas. We did not treat a wash-and-go, a valet, and paint correction as the same product.
Our process was:
- Check each public price page on 2 August 2026.
- Record the advertised amount rather than inventing a national average.
- Separate fixed-site and mobile services.
- Separate ordinary cars from SUVs, bakkies and larger vehicles where the provider did so.
- Compare packages by what they include, not only by the package name.
- Report observed ranges because the sample is not a statistically representative survey of every province.
Most of the businesses with usable public lists were in Gauteng and major urban centres. Treat the figures as a practical market check, not an official industry price index. Always confirm the current amount, travel fee, VAT treatment and package inclusions with the operator before booking.

What do the different car wash services include?
Wash-and-go
This is normally the cheapest menu item. It usually means an exterior wash, but the name does not guarantee drying, wheel cleaning, tyre dressing or an interior vacuum.
The fixed-site examples we checked ranged from R50 to R110 for a car. SUVs and bakkies were commonly R70 to R130 where a separate large-vehicle price was published.
Before choosing the cheapest option, ask whether “wash-and-go” includes drying. Some operators list “wash-and-go” and “wash and dry” as separate services.
Inside-and-out wash
An ordinary inside-and-out package generally adds vacuuming, a dashboard wipe, windows and door jambs to the exterior wash. It is a maintenance clean, not necessarily a stain-removal service.
At the fixed sites in our comparison, published car prices were roughly R85 to R180. Mobile entry-level packages started at about R100, while more convenience-led or detailed mobile packages were R250 to R550.
If the seats or carpets need extraction, ask for that explicitly. A quick vacuum and an upholstery extraction are not interchangeable.
Mini valet
A mini valet sits between a routine wash and a full valet, but there is no universal definition. One operator may include a more thorough vacuum and dashboard treatment; another may add wax, engine cleaning or light stain work.
Published mini-valet examples included R355 to R395 at Brooklyn Mall Car Wash and R550 at Afrixpress. Compare the inclusion list before comparing the price.
Interior or full valet
A valet generally involves considerably more labour than an ordinary wash. Depending on the operator, it may include seat and carpet extraction, roof-lining cleaning, boot cleaning, stain treatment, trim dressing and an exterior wash.
Mainstream published starting prices in our sample were around:
- R550 to R1,000 for cars
- R745 to R1,200 for SUVs and bakkies
Condition-heavy mobile jobs can exceed those bands. QL Mobile Carwash, for example, publishes an interior-valet range of R1,000 to R3,000 and says that vehicle size, condition, labour and travel affect the amount.
A suspiciously cheap “full valet” may simply include fewer processes. Ask whether seats and carpets are extracted, whether the roof lining is included and how stain removal is handled.
Hand polish, machine polish and paint correction
These terms are frequently confused:
- A hand-polish or wax package is generally an appearance and protection add-on. Published packages in our sample were commonly about R300 to R700.
- A single-stage machine polish uses a machine and abrasive product to improve gloss and reduce some light paint defects. Published starting prices ranged from about R850 to R3,000, depending on the vehicle and detailer.
- Multi-stage paint correction is more intensive specialist work. Published mobile-detailing prices reached approximately R1,800 to R4,700 in the lists we checked.
Do not book paint correction based only on the lowest online figure. The detailer needs to assess paint condition, panel size and the result you expect.
Why does an SUV or bakkie cost more?
The difference is usually about time and surface area rather than the vehicle badge. A larger body takes longer to wash and dry, while larger carpets, boots and seat layouts take longer to vacuum or extract.
In the public lists we checked, the large-vehicle surcharge was often:
- R10 to R50 on a simple wash
- R40 to R100 on a routine inside-and-out package
- R90 to R300 on a valet or detailing package
Seven-seat SUVs, double-cab bakkies, taxis and minibuses may have their own category. If a menu says only “SUV”, send the operator the vehicle model before relying on the displayed price.
Is a mobile car wash more expensive?
Usually, yes, when you compare like-for-like packages. Mobile operators must allow for travel, setup time and lower job density, while the customer pays for the convenience of not joining a queue.
The important exception is an efficient operator working within a small service radius or on recurring bookings. Some mobile businesses can keep prices competitive by washing several vehicles at one office complex or residential estate.
Check these four details before booking:
- Is travel included inside a defined area?
- Must you provide water or electricity?
- Is there a minimum call-out value?
- Will excessive dirt, pet hair or sand be charged separately?
For example, Pristine Auto Spa publishes a R6 per kilometre call-out fee outside its free 10 km Sunninghill radius, while Mobile Car Wash On Wheels says that travel outside Midrand attracts an additional fee.

Pet hair, mould, heavy mud, beach sand, tar and unusually dirty commercial vehicles often require an inspection or surcharge. Sending clear photos before the appointment reduces quote disputes.
A practical price list for a new car wash
If you are opening a car wash, do not copy the cheapest competitor and assume the numbers will work. First calculate what each service costs you to deliver, then compare the result with local published prices.
Here is a starting template, not a prescription. Replace the amounts after checking your labour time, site costs and local competitors.

The template sits inside the observed 2026 market bands, but that does not make it profitable at every site.
Work out your minimum viable price
For each package, add:
- Direct labour for the actual time spent on the vehicle.
- Chemicals, cloths and other consumables.
- Water and electricity.
- Travel for mobile jobs.
- Card or booking fees.
- A fair allocation for rent, equipment, insurance, marketing and admin.
- Rework and contingency.
Suppose those costs add up to R130 for one inside-and-out wash. To earn a 25% gross margin, do not merely add 25%. Divide the cost by 0.75:
R130 ÷ 0.75 = R173.33
A menu price of about R175 would produce a 25% gross margin before tax in this simplified example. If nearby customers will only pay R120, you need to reduce the time or cost, change the package, improve the offer or reject the location assumption. Quietly absorbing the gap is not a business model.

Ask both operators the same questions:
- Is the price for my exact vehicle type?
- Is drying included?
- Does the interior service include only vacuuming, or also extraction?
- Are the boot, roof lining, door jambs and mats included?
- Is stain removal included or charged after inspection?
- For mobile work, is travel included to my suburb?
- How long must seats and carpets dry before the vehicle can be used?
The answers make a R700 and R1,000 valet comparable. Without them, you are comparing names rather than services.
